Gaming Properties
Cripple Creek, Colorado is one of
three Colorado communities where limited-stakes gambling is legal.
State voters approved gambling
here in November 1990, almost exactly 100 years after Bob Womack
discovered gold in Poverty Gulch (now Cripple Creek). Limited-stakes
means that bets are limited to $5 each.
Economically, gambling has
created jobs for about 2,000 people and brought new revenues to the
city for parks and recreation, historic preservation, fire and
police protection. Gambling is under the supervision of the
Colorado Division of Gaming, which supplies monthly reports and
updates on gambling in Colorado.
The original intent of
limited-stakes gambling in Cripple Creek was not only economic
development but also preservation of historic buildings and sites.
There are still plenty of opportunities left for new casino
development.
